Natural building is an ancestral art - the first buildings humans lived in were made of earth. The foundation of natural building resides in the amazing properties of clay. Wet and sticky clay combined with the strength of sand and the fibrous structure of straw will dry into a sturdy earthen mortar, that will stand the test of time as long as its protected by a solid foundation, durable plaster and oil finish, and - in most cases - a solid roof.
Natural building is people powered; it takes teamwork and collaboration to build with the earth. This makes natural building a perfect service-learning project for K-12 and college students and for everyone to loosen up, dig our hands and feet into the earth below us, and create something beautiful. Applying cob (an earthen mortar made of clay, sand, and straw) onto the Earthbench project on the Tohono O'odham Southern AZ territory - the "Desert People" whose land originally extended from the Sonora Desert to Phoenix, AZ, but is not divided by the US - Mexico border.
The Tohono O'odham Peace on Earthbench built with cob, earthbags, rock foundation, plastic stuffed bottle bricks, earthen plaster with local nopales cactus water-resistant coating. Shaped in the form of one of their local sacred mountains and complete with a roof and rainwater system.
The Compassion Corner Earthbench built on the Downtown Davis, CA corner of 3rd & C st. This was a City of Davis Public Art project to build an Earthbench as a testament to the compassion work of local activist David Breaux. It was constructed with 233 bottle bricks and a community mosaic installation led by Mark Rivera.
